Grace inspects and harvests her garden

It’s been a couple of weeks since Grace inspected her garden. Now the seeds she planted are at their peak. She knows about the magical beans that are purple on the vine and green when cooked. It took some hunting to find those big enough to pluck.  As the Dawn Jogger and Grace harvested the latest batch, she said over and over, “This is going to be a really good dinner.” That statement included her enthusiasm for the tiny tomatoes. “Just pick the red ones, not the green ones,” she instructed. When it came time to have her photograph taken with her bed of sunflowers, she struck a demure pose. She does like to remind people that she’s shy…

Ending a good visit on the Sawyer Camp trail

On the way up to SFO this morning, the Dawn Jogger and visitor Gail stopped for brisk walk along the Sawyer Camp trail. It’s one of the few places where you can get up close to the Crystal Springs reservoir. And when the fog is hugging the western hills, there’s hardly a prettier spot on the Peninsula. Nice, as always, to have a walking companion, even for just a few days…

Early entrepreneurship, the Silicon Valley way

Camp BizSmart on Stanford campusIn hopes of burning off the calories from a delicious dinner last night at Station One in advance of birthday lunch for friend at Madera today, the Dawn Jogger headed off on the five-mile Stanford loop run this morning, leaving friend Gail to find her own way around the neighborhood. In one of those “only in Silicon Valley” moments, she passed one of the many camps that Stanford holds during the summer. Moms were dutifully dropping off their budding entrepreneurs at Camp BizSmart. Start ’em early to keep the boom going…

Big bridge, small Gail

The Dawn Jogger hasn’t much thought about the San Mateo bike bridge over San Francisquito Creek being a large structure. But it sure looked that way this morning when friend Gail tried to look over the top to the water below about halfway through the neighborhood loop walk. Yes, it’s July 21 and there’s still water in the Creek. Must be due to the June rains…

Bride mirage Dish top

Friend Gail is in town, the temps are due to heat up, so morning excursion to the Dish seemed like sensible exercise solution. As we walked, she recalls visiting years ago and talking the same walk with dog Cassie along. (Yes, to new Dish walkers, there was a time leashed dogs were allowed on the paths.) When we were almost at the top, we spotted a women in the distance dressed all in white. Was thing some kind of runaway bride? As she got closer, her bridal wear was transformed into exercise wear. Fun to have company…

Tale of the red canoe continues

red canoe at Lake Lagunita

With the water completely gone from Lake Lagunita, the Dawn Jogger found that some folks had moved the red canoe from its earlier position on the lake bottom to what was once the lake’s beach. (Yes, Stanford used to bring in sand and people used to enjoy the Lake until it was deemed no longer recreational.) It also looked like there had been a couple of bonfires. Of course, nothing like the old Big Game bonfires…

Aligned atop the Dish

Dig Dish

When the Dawn Jogger got to the top of Big Dish this morning, there was a momentary alignment. In a straight line up from the runner (a woman she usually spots around Lake Lagunita with her two dogs, dogless, of course on the Dish) is the moon. The Dish itself is pointing upwards. Does this mean a day of alignment?…

Bubble gun a big success

The Dawn Jogger picked up a bubble gun when she was at the Connoisseurs’ Marketplace thinking it would be a good little surprise to take to Grace when she visited for dinner. She was right, it was a hit. Not only did she like making her own bubbles, she liked having the DJ “try to catch” her. Of course, the wind came into play more than an accurate aim. The bubbles pointed at baby James did not concern or get his attention. He’s a happy baby. Especially when mama Julie is holding him…

Shoot out with M-A classmate

The Dawn Jogger got up this morning and combined an morning run with breakfast with her Menlo-Atherton classmate Michael Rosenberg, in town visiting relatives, who all live locally. Michael is a visionary in developing and advocating for efficiencies in clinical development and founder of a successful company, Health Decisions. To the DJ, he was the guy who got to borrow his father’s British racing green MGB, a very cool ride in the day. Breakfast talk ranged from the power of Big Pharma to how to approach end of life decisions. Just the usual Cafe Borrone patter…

On the clock at Connoisseurs’ Marketplace

It was walk downtown to this weekend’s Connoisseurs’ Marketplace, a hard-to-ignore event for InMenlo, even though it’s more about non-locals, both as visitors and vendors. She met up Scott and Marilyn at Fred Mertz’s photography booth. Fred is a MP-based photographer and he and Scott had a lot to talk about. The cool temps were perfect for strolling and the Dawn Jogger picked up a few things for Grace and John. She also met the Shriner Clown (head of the local Masonic Lodge – another InMenlo interview in the future!). Nice way to spend the morning and do some content gathering at the same time. Now, out to survey what’s happening in Grace’s garden…
