Learning about being a prima dona

It wasn’t until Grace and the gang left just a bit ago (all the better to beat the Stanford/Oregon traffic) did the Dawn Jogger realize that it was one year ago that the male DJ’s memorial service was held. She had thought about the day in advance, but once it was here, she didn’t, mostly because she was very busy.

All that made it all the better that Grace was given the opportunity to learn her prima dona moves. The male DJ had, early in his photography career, taken lots of photos of prima dona, most of them scheduled, avoiding the paparazzi route. But he nevertheless knew when a legitimate press photographer backed off with polite respect.

That occurred  when the prima dona, more or less politely extended her arm, and said, “No press, please.” And that’s what Miss Grace learned tonight…

All about the really big game tomorrow

Stanford fans seem to be in overdrive about the game tomorrow against the Ducks, who seem to be channeling their wet weather to the Peninsula. As is always the case, there are many Cardinal banners unfurled in front of Menlo homes. When the Dawn Jogger went out and about on her early morning power walk, she did spy one Duck banner. And that takes a bit of bravery, maybe more so on 11/11/11…

Wispy reeds of fall

The Dawn Jogger combined her exercise with downtown Menlo errands, meeting a friend for coffee (and wicked croissant in her case) at Borrone this morning, then making her way up Santa Cruz Ave. before heading back home. There was lots to see including an Zeppelin overhead, which made a good InMenlo post. Then there was a fuzzy purplish plant that caught her eye…

All hail the crows – and what they scare away

That there didn’t use to be crows in Menlo Park is a topic the Dawn Jogger has heard discussed on a number of occasions. She doesn’t remember crows sitting in the trees in numbers when she was a child. But then again maybe she just didn’t notice, although she distinctly remembers when the black squirrels began to outnumber the grey ones. Anyway, she’s glad to have the crows in her neighborhood now. Maybe all the more to scare away smaller birds that are insistent about coming into the house...

Closer to home otherwordly scene

Lake Lagunita with tule fog

The Dawn Jogger has been enjoying her predawn walks at Bedwell Bayfront Park and the other worldly scenes that unfold. This morning she got a closer to home viewing treat. She was jogging around the banks of Lake Lagunita before sun up and captured a vista make possible by the mixture of the sun’s rays just starting to make their way over the horizon and a thick tule fog on the dry lake bottom. One can only imagine ghosts watching it all from the two deck chairs…

The sun comes up on time again

Big Dish

The Dawn Jogger realizes that the sun always comes up on time, e.g. the time it is coming up at that part of the year, adjusted for daylight savings time. But for the last few weeks, she’s felt like the sun’s been tardy when it doesn’t rise until almost 7:30 am. This morning things were back to normal and she was at the Piers Lane parking lot of the Big Dish when the gate opened. She climbed the hill quickly enough to see the sun come up just as she reached the top.

Walk around the neighborhood includes railroad inspection

Camarrilo railroad bridgeJust before she set out on her loop neighborhood walk, she got an email from a young man who lives a couple of blocks away and has constructed a 1/29 gauge railroad in his parents front yard. He’d made some major improvements, including a bridge dedicated to a friend who’d died last year. Stopping by to see it in action was good fun. And provided a good InMenlo story

She’s having a birthday – Grace turns 4

Grace turned four years old yesterday but the family celebration was today. The female Dawn Jogger can still remember vividly the excitement she and the male DJ shared when they drove to Walnut Creek the day after she was born. The first grandchild – and a girl!

The journey through the first four years has been a wonder. Yes, the female DJ is more into these preschool years than she thought she’d be, but the she maintains it’s mainly because Grace has been such a delightful little person.

The dinner menu was both decidedly California – the birthday girl wanted sushi – and old fashioned, with a homebaked birthday cake, yellow with chocolate and strawberry frosting. The latter took some extra expection on the birthday girls part…

Clouds in the puddles after the rain

All sorts of things have the Dawn Jogger gasping for air, just a bit. There’s some poem in the recesses of her mind about clouds and the language they speak. This morning began with clouds in the puddles. A lovely sight at dawn after the rain…

A walk in the park, around and around

Holbrook Palmer Park

The Dawn Jogger had an InMenlo interview fairly early this morning at Holbrook Palmer Park, so she decided to go an hour in advance to get her morning exercise. That meant going around and around the Park’s perimeter, not her favorite activity but acceptable given how dark it is until well after 7:00 am. There were at least a lot of dogs to watch for amusement. A newish steel bridge also caught her eye…
