Grace talks to author Susan Gal

author Susan Gal helps a young illustrator

After a good long walk around the neighborhood to look at Halloween decorations (some of which were “too scary”), the Dawn Jogger and Grace went to the story time held each Sunday morning at local book store Kepler’s. Today they got more than just a story, children’s book author Susan Gal read her latest picture book, Into the Outdoors. After hearing the story of a children’s walk in the woods, the author invited the kids to help her create a new character. Grace worked on the ears with the author’s help…

Halloween time with Grace

The Dawn Jogger did a swift neighborhood circuit quite early this Saturday morning, all the better to be at Grace’s house before noon. The plan was to attend the St. Raymond Pumpkin Festival and then spend the night. The local festival is perfect for the younger set, lots of easy to “win” games and other activities spread across the school’s field. Grace got her face painted in a butterfly motif. But the real fun was putting on the scary eyeball she won…

On the trail with a couple of dogs

Friend Amy drove north this morning to go on the Arastradero Preserve triple looping trail with the Dawn Jogger, accompanied by her two chihuahuas, Rosetta and Lucy. Even with their small stature and short legs, they climbed the hills just as ably as Cassie the Australian Shepherd did in her prime. Yes, it was nice to have companion dogs on the trail. No, she’s not ready for a new dog…

Private fitness training, a common sight in Menlo

fitness training in a Menlo Park neighborhoodThere are a whole bunch of things the Dawn Jogger likes about this photo she took on her morning neighborhood circuit. There’s the huge tree trunk that could fall at any moment on the trainer and his two trainees. Then there’s the fact how easy it is to take over a quiet street in west Menlo with various fitness training apparatus. But what she likes the very most is the patience of the two canine participants. You have to look close to see the tail of the yellow Lab just below the trainer’s black shorts. And then there’s the Pit Bull mix, center of photo at the right side. What a great sentry he makes…

Continue to be enchanted

Bedwell Bayfront ParkFor years, the Dawn Jogger has disliked October, December and January. Those are the months that rising at her normal time means walking in the dark. The last year has brought more flexibility. That means she can get to her Wednesday walk at Bedwell Bayfront Park shortly before 7:00 am (not 6:00, when it really is pinch black). Whether overcast or clear, there is always a scene that warrants a photo…

Martian hues come to Lake Lag

dry but tule filled Lake Lagunita

Proving that Bedwell Bayfront isn’t the only place to get other wordly scenes, the Dawn Jogger came upon a mixture of red skies and thick tule fog hovering over Lake Lagunita this morning. The contrast are more distinct than trusty Lumix’s capabilities. Good morning outing…

Dish walking just after dawn

Big DishThe sun was just start to peek over Big Dish as the Dawn Jogger made her way up the back side from Piers Lane this morning. She spotted the first pop up green grass of the season. She and the male DJ would have spent a good five minutes discussing whether this was the earliest first green ever. All she could do is snap a photo…

Out and about with a photographer

It was almost like a Sunday of old this morning, those great days when the Dawn Joggers set out for a good hike accompanied by dog Cassie. Today the female DJ had another pleasant outing with photographer Frances Freyberg, who generously contributes her talents to InMenlo projects. They met late morning at Bedwell Bayfront Park to get some miles in before meeting up with a local birding enthusiast, who took them on a tour of the park’s current feathered residents. Both satisfying and fun…

This is your brain on ‘shrooms

The Dawn Jogger thinks this was a day where the stars were all aligned. Or misaligned, she’s not sure. She started well before dawn for a jaunt around Lake Lagunita and never actually saw the sun rise over the lake bed. She was just early enough, and the sun was just late enough.

Close to Sand Hill Rd near the Stanford Golf Course, she came upon this brain-like mushroom. She found it a fitting pictorial for the day ahead.  Oct. 14 has been designated as Dress Like Steve Jobs Day, which just happens to coincide with the one year anniversary of the male DJ’s determined announcement, “I’m going to die now.” With that on her mind, she headed up to UCSF to hear about brain cancer.

Vicki Kennedy, Ted’s widow was the keynote but most of the male DJ’s doctors and nurses were also in attendance. There were others like herself who had lost loved one and current UCSF patients. It was like reliving the blessing and curse. The blessing of the best of care. And the curse of dying…

Come to Menlo and leave lighter

At least that’s what this fellow found out. The Dawn Jogger spotted him on a walk around the Menlo Oaks neighborhood. People should read everything and nothing into this sighting…
