And not a cloud in the sky…

…But clearly a smudge on trusty Lumix’s lens. The Dawn Jogger had noticed it earlier but thought she’d eradicated it. But it appeared in all the photos she took today while hiking in Arastradero Preserve late morning today. Guess it means another trip to Keeble and Shucatt…

Painterly kind of Big Dish scene

Big Dish August 2011

The Dawn Jogger was so dismayed at the greyness of the mornings that yesterday she chose to walk to her downtown Menlo Park appointment and back – taking the long way by the creek – rather than get up and jog

But this morning, she slept in a bit and skies were just starting to clear as she made her up way up the “backside” of the Dish from Piers Lane. The whole scene looked a bit painterly to her…

Finally a sunrise where you can see the sun

Lake Lagunita at sunrise in August 2011

Spectacular it was not. But the female Dawn Jogger was treated to what’s been a rarity this summer, a look a the sun as it rose above the horizon. This morning’s relatively cloudless sky made that possible as did the fact that she’d gotten to the banks of Lake Lagunita a bit earlier than usual. Now on to the day’s duties…

Great day at the ballpark except for the game

McCovey statue near AT&T park

The Dawn Jogger took a chance on the weather this morning and headed up to San Francisco for combined walk and day at ballpark to see the Giants play the Pirates with friend Gail from Transamerica days. She was right about one thing – the fog had burned off by the time she arrived. Finding a place to park near one of the new condos, she did a great up and back walk along the Embarcadero that measure a bit more than 5 miles. As it was early, she got a glimpse of the still empty park.

If only the game could have been as satisfying. The Giants got trounced 9-2. But fun hearing about Gail’s now teenage boys. Wow, time really flies…

Finding a spot of color on another gray morning

The Dawn Jogger found herself alone around Lake Lagunita except for one pajama clad jogger. (Why waste time changing when you wake up; this method eliminates dirty running clothes.) Had the continuing gray scared everyone off? It’s hardly a mood lifter, especially morning after morning. Luckily the Stanford works department left a spot of color as it trimmed the oaks…

Whither the sun at sunrise?

Big Dish August 2011

So the sun is now close to rising at a time the Dawn Jogger might be out and about and watching it rise. But the chances are slim this summer when coastal fog creeps inland overnight and stays in palce at least mid-morning. Today is was particularly dense when the DJ did her Monday Big Dish run. It’s not cold, it’s just dreary…

Last hurrah for Grace’s Garden, summer 2011 vintage

While there is another little person who comes along on Sunday family visits, the Dawn Jogger still refers to the assembled crew as “Grace and the gang.” And upon arrival today (largely ignoring baby brother James except for the obligatory pat on the head or mini hug), Grace clearly had an agenda: Let’s do all the Menlo Park activities (garden, school playground, wading pool). First up was the garden, which just may be one of the best ideas the DJ ever had. It’s now a bit past it’s peak. The sunflowers, which Grace planted as seeds, have been a tremendous success, but only one stalk was worth cutting for her to take home.

The tiny tomatoes which Grace quickly described as looking “just like Jelly Belly’s” were plentiful enough to pick, and the purple beans that turn green when cooked were also still producing. Combined with the Persian cucumbers, they made up a garden fresh salad that was part of their dinner. Shall we add that it was Grace who diligently plucked every stem from the tomatoes before putting them in the bowl? Clearly this is Nan’s descendant more than the DJ’s, bloodlines not withstanding…

Lunch time photo lesson

The Dawn Jogger returned to the Saturday Dish run, which had fallen off the regular schedule for reasons she’s not quite sure, given that the cranky knee has been good to go for a number of weeks. But the fun photo of the day was taken at lunch with Scott at the Allied Arts. Playing around with the trusty Lumix, she got a lesson on how to select the settings that would focus on the immediate and blur the background. An iced tea provided the subject matter…

It’s August but there’s water in the creek

egret in San Francisquito Creek

Joggers, walkers, and cyclists who frequent the bridge at the end of San Mateo Drive over San Francisquito Creek are in agreement about one thing – rarely has there been water in the Creek this late in the summer. This morning the Dawn Jogger noticed that was making one inhabitant happy. A snowy white egret was splashing in the water and maybe making a breakfast of the insects the water brings. Now the bets are on – will the Creek water stay in time to welcome the first rain of the season…

Peninsula air conditioning makes for good Arastradero outing

Young deer at Arastradero Preserve

While it was admittedly later than usual, the Dawn Jogger awoke to sunshine rather than overcast skies this morning. But the fog bank was still hugging the western hills, which meant it would be stay cool enough for an outing to Arastradero Preserve. The loop that she used to do every Friday morning with the male DJ and Cassie is a good up and down without being killer but can get hot during the summer. One of her early morning Dish exercisers had told her that there had been a fire at this Preserve, just days after the Piers Lane bridge burning, and she saw evidence of it. Whether arson or not has not been determined. The highlight of the morning was a young deer who peered at her motionless. Was it still learning how humans act?…
