Signs of life in Grace’s garden

bean in Grace's gardeThe Dawn Jogger can’t recall if you blogged about the new Easter tradition, planting seeds in the garden that the male DJ built for Grace and him. They enjoyed some good spring and summer months there last year – and it came to be known as Grace’s garden. This Easter she planted carrot, beans, and sunflowers. Just a little more than a week later, the beans and sunflowers have sprouted. A big victory for the green thumbless DJ. But maybe she’s getting help…

Out and about, fun in the sun

Bedwell Bayfront Park

The beautiful Bay Area weather continues, a good day for another bayside walk, this time at Bedwell Bayfront Park. Taking advantage of some folks the Dawn Jogger had met through email, KC friend Alice and the DJ then stopped at Mitchell Johnson’s studio – he was having an open house – and then at Angel Heart Cakes. A tour of their old stomping ground but with new people and places…

Fireworks on the Stanford campus following bin Laden announcement?

The embers in the fire pit near Lake Lagunita were still burning this morning when the Dawn Jogger took a spin along its banks, surrounded on all sides by smashed beer cans. The video of crowds at the White House last night, following the announcement that the U.S. had killed Osama bin Laden, showed mostly young people. It was the Dawn Jogger’s son who had called to tell her the news. It has her wondering if this news that the man who led the terrorist attack on 9/11 was finally captured and “brought to justice” had more meaning for the 30 something and under set than those who’d come to a maturity during the Cold War and Vietnam? If it was the bin Laden announcement that brought students to the Lake’s banks last night, they seem to have made the most of their celebration. The remnants of  good-sized fireworks were also spread on the ground…

Sunday includes a couple touches of grace

Sister Simone Campbell

The Dawn Jogger went on her walk this morning as temps roared into the 80s. She knew it would be a full day – one that was indeed grace filled. Along with friend Alice from KC, she went to Berkeley for a reception at an historic Julia Morgan home for the Catholic social justice organization Network that was key to getting the health care reform legislation passed. Executive Director Sister Simone Campbell entertained – and educated – those in attendance about her encountered with the President and Vice President and other “inside the Beltway” gossip.

Then it was on to another kind of grace, personified by the Miss Grace who we met, along with her parents at Camino, a restaurant in Oakland with good and interesting food at reasonable prices.

All of this enjoyed under sunny and warm skies…

Mellow yellow spring morning along the Bay

wildflowers at Baylands

mustard at BaylandsThere’s nothing more pleasant for a Midwesterner still trying to shed the depths of winter than a spring time walk under clear blue skies in the Bay Area. The Dawn Jogger’s friend Alice from Kansas City is in town for a conference and they set out this morning for the five-mile Baylands loop. (Alice, too, could remember when Baylands was a dump; the new “landfill” is adjacent.) The wildflowers – both yellow daisy like blooms and mustard – were in full bloom. Thanks to the rain, the mustard was taller than Alice…

Lake Lagunita is mirror lake this morning

In advance of busy day – interview with Assemblyman Rich Gordon for InMenlo, pick up friend Alice from KC, cocktail party later in the day – the Dawn Jogger managed to get an just-after-sunrise spin around Lake Lagunita. The water was so still, it was like looking at a mirror…

Finally – make way for ducklings!

ducklings at Lake Lagunita

With all the water in Lake Lagunita this season, the Dawn Jogger has been waiting patiently for this year’s ducklings. It seems late in the season for the first crop, but with Easter late, maybe the whole world of spring is late. This morning she spotted a mother and father parading – well, actually paddling – around with the newborns. When the babies want to play catch up, they don’t just paddle faster but rather scoot on top of the water. Another item off the list…

Only a rose could follow grace

It was a walking morning for the Dawn Jogger, the loop around the neighborhood. As it has done the past few days, the sun continued its peek-a-boo ways but it came out to add luster to the many roses in bloom in gardens. A banner year for roses? Maybe she thinks that every year…

Enjoying a Grace-filled Easter

easter egg hunt

Young Bruin fansThe Dawn Jogger is having a wonderful Easter day. She admits getting a little misty last night when she hid the eggs in the backyard – the first time in 30 years that she’d done that duty alone. (Ok, he will be embarrassed by this but John enjoyed an egg hunt long into his adulthood and has only been “saved” since becoming a father.)

After the church service – filled with all the traditional hymns – Grace participated in the egg hunt and bubble blowing at Trinity. Then back to the house for another egg hunt – the backyard is near perfect for hiding eggs. She then discovered that the Easter Bunny had left some Bruin wear for her and soon-to-be-born brother James.

After lunch, it was time for the new Easter tradition, be it early or late – time to plant seeds in the Grace’s garden, which made its debut last year and was the activity that she and Grandpa Chrisie shared. All agree – perfect way to remember him. And the best news, Grace really got into the planting.

Now the Easter ham is in oven. And John is right, it does make the house smell good…

Pleasant Saturday spoiled by baseball

Ravenswood Salt Ponds

Yet another Saturday morning InMenlo assignment started the Dawn Jogger’s day today, this time at the relatively new Ravenswood Salt Ponds. It was part of an Earth Day volunteer activity. The cloud cover made the lighting particularly attractive for a bayside outing.

Then she walked to the Sunken Diamond to see the Bruins play the Cardinal while listening to the Giants game on the radio. While the Giants were never in command today and lost their third straight, the Bruins outplayed the Cardinal – the batter warming up in the photo went on to hit a triple and score – until the bottom of the ninth when the team’s pitchers stopped throwing strikes. The Cardinal came back from a three run deficit to win the game. Alas, but tomorrow brings Grace…
