John W. Hubbard: On the centennial of his birth

John W. Hubbard born April 22, 1911

That Earth Day came along 41 years ago and picked April 22 as its date paid perfect homage to the Dawn Jogger’s father, John W. Hubbard, born on that date 100 years ago today. He was a steward of the earth before it was fashionable. He did it because it was the right thing to do, which is how he carried out other aspects of his life.

Outdoorsman, scratch golfer in his younger years (he shot 89 when he was 89), avid amateur photographer, World War II vet, businessman so loyal to his company that he spent his entire professional life with one firm, a “true gentleman” as cousin Robin has said repeatedly over the years.

But more than anything else, he was devoted husband to his beloved Ede, wonderful father (to both Dawn Joggers) and a doting grandfather. He was the Johnny of his youth who became John as an adult until his 15-month old namesake – John Hubbard Getze – uttered the words “Booka.” Why Booka no one could determine but it was Booka he remained.

Of the Hubbard and Reid clans, he was the last of his generation to die. That he did so on December 5th, the birthday of his grandson, remains more comforting than disturbing.

Photo taken by son-in-law Chris Gulker during the 80s in Southern California, where Booka and Nan visited often before the DJs moved north.

Yep, that was Obama whizzing by

President Obama in Menlo Park

The Dawn Jogger could offer yet another photo of Lake Lagunita. Or she could use the shot of President Obama’s motorcade whizzing by just a block from her doorstep. Complete details on InMenlo

Checking it off the list, one by one

The Dawn Jogger has been having a bit of a frustrating time getting an account the male DJ held at on online brokerage that begins with “e” closed. Many phone calls, many forms, all for a paltry amount. Told yesterday the three things needed, she’s taking the tactic that if she gets the docs to the brokerage quickly, it will close the account and cut her the check. All that to say she decided to walk to her attorney, where one doc needed to be notarized, this morning as the day’s exercise. Along the way she spotted a fanciful mailbox…

Lake Lag takes on a surreal look

Snowy egret at Lake Lagunita

As the water in Lake Lagunita evaporates, the lakebed takes on a surreal look. So observed the Dawn Jogger this morning on a spin around its banks. The snowy egret remains a constant…

First stop, classic car show at M-A

America's Pastime car Show at M-A

The Dawn Jogger and Scott had a first of the morning assignment to cover America’s Pastime Car Show at M-A. It’s a fun, low-key affair where it’s easy to talk with the owners. One guy had owned his ’57 Chevy since high school and another (pictured) had a repair shop in town for decades. Full details on InMenlo. It’s a been three days of very interesting InMenlo interviews…

Hey, isn’t that a boat of sorts?

Lake Lagunita

Stanford may have declared Lake Lagunita “no longer recreational” and the lake itself is shrinking rapidly, but evidently that didn’t deter some industrious students from building a boat. The Dawn Jogger spied it this morning as she jogged lightly around the lake’s banks. It looks like a combination pontoon/sail boat. Moored and ready to go…

Seasons continue, the marriage does not

Lily the dog
Life in the Bay Area is marked not only by nature’s changing season but also by commercial seasons. That first became clear to the female Dawn Jogger last year when crab season opened and Peet’s released its Holiday Blend. How strange it was to greet these late Fall milestones without the male DJ by her side. Yes, she enjoyed the first of the season crab with John and Julie (Grace doesn’t seemed to have yet acquired a taste) as usual. And yes, she bought and used Holiday Blend as long as it was available. But it all seemed a bit hollow.

Now another season of milestones has begun. Peet’s released its Anniversary Blend and the salmon season is set to begin on May 1, meaning fresh fish at Menlo Park’s Sunday farmers market. She had one of those moments that she’s told other widows and widowers have when she walked into Peet’s this morning and saw the Anniversary Blend display. The thought formed before it was edited: “Can’t wait to tell Chris that the Anniversary Blend is here.”

No Chris to tell. No longer married. But thanks to the grace of God, a walk with Scott and Lily in the afternoon to talk things over. No excuse that she didn’t get her own photograph of Miss LilyPad, who was, all in all, a good dog today…

Sparkling, crisp morning at Baylands

pheasant at Byxbee Park

The morning temperature and bright sunshine combined for almost perfect jogging conditions and the Dawn Jogger decided that it was time to check on spring at Baylands. No ducklings yet but a ton of migrating geese. The payoff was almost immediate – a pheasant spotted eating breakfast in Byxbee Park. Nice way to start the day…

Isn’t the sunrise glowing orange?

Sunrise

Couldn’t be any other way, thinks the Dawn Jogger. The World Series Champion San Francisco Giants return the AT&T for their home opener and she’s ready – custom made Giants jersey and orange ball cap in place. She spotted Bochy at sports banquet last night but didn’t get a good photo. Getting on the train in an hour…

Wow – a photo everywhere she looked

Great Blue Heron at Lake Lagunita

Mallard ducks at Lake LagunitaThe advantage of a more flexible schedule is that when it was still raining at 6:00 this morning, the Dawn Jogger just waited it out. But the time she headed out a bit after 7:30, the skies were blue. The later hour really showed off Lake Lagunita at its spring best and between the glistening water and the green box and various birds, there seemed to be a photo in every direction. She actually had a hard time choosing. All due to the subject matter, not photographic prowess…
