An outing without moisture

Hoover Tower on Stanford campus

The Dawn Jogger experienced something this morning that’s been rare – an outing without moisture. She returned to the classic Stanford route that she, the male DJ and Cassie did a zillion times. Nice to be on a quiet campus. And the clouds cooperated for a Hoover Tower photo op…

Another day filled with Grace

So maybe the Dawn Jogger has not been feeling at her tippy top best. The current malaise was dissected in details last night over dinner with friend Kay. No conclusions (other than the obvious).

Luckily today was not the time for introspection. Grace was in the house, brought over for a visit by her Dad. It was a rainy morning and time for more March Madness, so the trio headed over to the Dutch Goose for lunch, always a destination when sports events are going on. It was Grace’s initiation to the Goose and, like children before her, she was easily distracted by the scene and a toy from a vending machine.

After an attempt at a nap, it was down to Oak Knoll School for some play, where she found one big ball. Amidst it all there was basketball. Loved the Butler win, hated the Arizona loss…

Big Bird near Big Dish

Big Bird near Big Dish

The Dawn Jogger is headed to Grandparent Day at Grace’s preschool this morning, so it was up and out well before dawn. She encountered a very wet Big Dish area. Water was pouring down from everywhere, causing new streams and “flooding” even stretches of the asphalt walking/jogging path. But no showers. Just the cheery slight of the Great Blue Heron…

Dark, rainy start to the day

rainy morning in Menlo ParkThe Dawn Jogger knew if was up and out, raining or not, today. One can take a day off due to the elements but not two, except in very extreme instances. She got a little lucky this morning. It wasn’t too cold, the wind hadn’t kicked up and it was more spritzing than really coming down. Now it’s pouring…

Rained out – and a return to the archive

Shadowy Dawn Joggers and Cassie

Yes it was Wednesday Dish morning but not only was it raining steadily but the DJ had to run son John to the train – and get to an early morning InMenlo assignment. So the stars aligned to sleep in a bit, catching up on some exercise in the afternoon by walking her tax package up to UPS at Sharon. (Alas, not the package going to the IRS/state but rather the tax preparer. Yep, she’s a bit tardy on this task.)

She had occasion to be looking through the male DJs iPhoto after lunch today and came across this photo from? [She wishes she’d jotted down the date and is too lazy to start the search over.] She’s guessing that it was in the early 2000s, as Cassie the Australian Shepherd was still running with the Dawn Joggers. Those mornings when we were a trio remain precious…

Gettting down to business

Lake Lagunita March 2011

When the Dawn Jogger doesn’t post her morning picture until evening, it usually means it’s been a busy day. Today was dedicated to “getting down to business.” That meant working on some estate details and – finally – getting the income tax stuff together. (Boring and tedious work that ultimately feels good.) Thank goodness there was a fun lunch break with a women in her 80s, who has had a horse at the Circus Club for the majority of her years. She picks up her current steed  three times a week and trailers him off to for a ride in the hills. Wow (and complete story to come on InMenlo). It was Lake Lagunita’s resident Snowy Egret who got the day started…

Three for three in the get rained on category

Rain squalls moving into mid-Peninsula

The Dawn Jogger was fully prepared to get rained on when she set out for her Saturday outing. She was somewhat prepared yesterday morning when she took the long way (along the creek) to walk downtown to the farmers market and back. This morning it looked like the storms had passed – blue sky and billowy clouds. But once on the Dish she could see the squall coming her way, what she learned later, was a series of rain storms that will continue to keep the Bay Area wet for the week. So for the record: Saturday – drenched, Sunday – intense 10 minutes but dry by the time she got home, today – wet again. Guess this will be the routine for awhile…

Ede aka Nan aka E aka my mother

Edith Reid HubbardToday my mother, who died in 2003, would have been 100 years old. I thought about her while dodging rain drops out on my morning jog, as I have been the last couple of weeks as March 19 approached.

She’s been known as “Nan” so long (30 plus years, since son John shortened Nana) that I’ve forgotten what I called her. I guess it was “Mom” and “Mommy” before that. To my father and her devoted husband, she was Ede (with an “e” but not an “i”.) And  to my teenage friends “E.”

I, of course, didn’t know her in her jaunty, coquettish youth (as picttured) – I didn’t enter her life until she was her her late 30s. From what my father said, she was “a catch.” Dating during the Depression, they would walk home from work together – from the Financial District to the Sunset. The story was that they saved money so that they could buy an ice cream.

Not that they were teetotalers. Before I entered they’re life, the would play golf all day, party all night, and tee off at dawn.

Me and moving to Menlo Park changed all that. My mother was the quintessential mom – PTA volunteer, Girl Scout leader, homemaker, baker of superb chocolate chip cookies and brownies. All my friends liked coming to E’s house.

I don’t think I ever said “thanks.” She was just “being a Mom” in my mind. But I do know I was darn lucky. Chris put together a nice tribute on gulker.com at the time of her death…

Light drizzle doesn’t bother critters

Blue Heron near Big DishThe weather report was for significant rain during both the morning and afternoon commute today. Maybe that was the reason for the much lower than typical number of people doing the Dish this morning. While it was gusty at times, the rain was no more than a drizzle. It was too light to bother the joggers and walkers. And maybe so light that the Blue Heron and young cattle didn’t notice…

Going for the green, sidetracked by geese

Migrating geese at Lake Lagunita

There are so many lush green hillsides at this time of the year that the Dawn Jogger set out before sunrise this morning thinking she capture one of them as St. Patrick’s Day homage. (It just stuck her that this was once a big holiday for her and the male DJ – many years ago. Where are you Scotty Snottie and the Hankies?) But the many geese spending a few days at the large mud puddle known as Lake Lagunita sidetracked her. How many geese can get there heads in the water/mud at once? Guess it was breakfast time. Plus, the shot had a bit of a painterly feel…
