Gorgeous day, great new route

View looking west from Ladera in Menlo Park

In spring-like weather, the Dawn Jogger headed out to Ladera, thinking she’d run the jogging path along Alpine Road. But when she got there, the lure of hill work was too great, so up La Mesa she went – and up and up. The total mileage wasn’t great but the climb made for a good run and some great views both east and west. Webb Ranch became a spec in the distance…

Official welcome home from the herd

cattle herd on Big Dish land

Some time yesterday afternoon, a great dense cloud descended on the mid-Peninsula, bringing not really rain but constant drip. It was less drippy but still dense when the Dawn Jogger headed out for her up and over Big Dish run. Everything in the distance was like seeing through gauze. She didn’t have to look far, though, for members of the current grazing herd. They greeted her on her way down the back side of the Dish. And were in no hurry to move out of the way…

Spectacular sunrise, well sort of

The Dawn Jogger could tell that the sunrise was going to be spectacular this morning when she saw the first hint of bright red on the horizon as she crossed Sand Hill Road. The question: Could you make it across the two fairways of the Stanford golf course and then to the rise near Lake Lagunita fast enough? No, was the answer, nothing to see at that point.

But by the time she’s circled the Lake and was by the Don and Robin Kennedy Kosher House, another show had started. The truth, though, is that it wasn’t quite as brilliant as the photo shows, a rare example of the camera capturing something more spectacular than the eye. Meanwhile she’s wondering if the egret who had the lake pond almost itself is the same one photographer Laura Hamilton photographed on Big Dish land. In the past, she’s seen “big” birds roam between Dish and Lake…

Wow – it’s dark out there in the morning

Bare oak next to Big Dish

It’s been some time since the Dawn Jogger hopped up right at 6 AM and hit the jogging path. Why run in the dark? But with the “cable guy” do at 8:00 this morning, she knew she had to get going if she was going to do the Dish. It was still pitch black as she crossed the Stanford golf course and there was only the barest hint of light as she made her way up from Junipero Serra. Even when she reached the top – where she was greeted by someone she’d interviewed for InMenlo, how he recognized her she can only imagine – only the barest of sunrise’s was showing. Good enough framed behind her favorite oak…

Every bit as bare but a whole lot greener

When the Dawn Jogger returned home from New York last night, everyone was talking about how cold it was. The driver told her it has been 36 degrees Monday morning. Well, that is cold for the Bay Area but a mini heat wave compared to her last few days in Manhattan.

This morning, it was back in the 40s, and she traded the snowy white Central Park and its barren trees to the green grassy slopes adjacent to Lake Lagunita, which was sporting its first pond of the year, chock-a-block with mallards and geese. The big oak near the student housing was as bare as the Central Park trees, but on her way back to the neighborhood, she noticed quite a few liquid ambar tress with leaves clinging. Goodness gracious, it’s mid-January, leaves be gone…

Ghost buster building, two ways

reservoir path Central Park

Central Park Jan 2011On a another bright but chilly morning (temps in mid-20s) the female Dawn Jogger did one last long loop around Central Park, with one detour to the top of the reservoir for a final New York good bye. The “ghost buster building” is a favorite and one she sees throughout the day across the Park from where she’s staying. At this time of year, with the low winter light, the colors change subtly as the day passes by. Back now to the reality of day to day living…

Sights on a Sunday in New York

Dawn Jogger near the Met

Blue skies. Glistening snow. Blustery wind. Barking dogs. 5k racers. Joggers and more joggers. Icy pathways. 10 great photos. Pretty sights in every directions. But for now, the female Dawn Joggers snapped by a friend with trio of bears and the Met in the background. All to end too soon…

Saturday morning in the Park

Dog and master Central Park January 2011

There was just enough snowfall yesterday to make the Central Park pathways icy this morning, so the female Dawn Jogger stuck to the main road for her loop around the Park’s perimeter. She was a bit early for a sleep-in-Saturday so she had minimal company, except for the usual dog people were out on their AM stroll. The woman with a splash of red fit perfectly with were red-adorned pooch. Eight million stories in the City…

Snowy day in New York

Snowy weather in NYC on 1/7/11

The female Dawn Jogger was not in New York before the blizzard on 12/26/10, so she doesn’t know how big a deal the media made of it in advance. But they’ve been talking about today’s snow for the last five days, seemingly non-stop with shot after shot of snow plows in the ready. This time the City would be ready.

But for what? The flakes were plump and steady through mid-afternoon, but ultimately didn’t amount to much – at least on the streets of Midtown where she spent all day with a friend, first at MOMA for extended period and later to a smaller but interesting design museum at  Columbus Circle. The bare spots in Central Park have been filled in, though.

In the process she found it was hard to take a good snow shot. The Park shot included with this post was taken at about 10:00 am but doesn’t do justice. More shots taken from her friend’s digs on 55th weren’t better. Hmmm, guess she needs Snow Photography 101….

Sidewalks heat up for TV filming

Central Park reservoir

TV crew at 79th & FifthThe announcements have been posted for days, with no parking signs along a stretch of Fifth Ave from 79th to 77th. And while there was a tiny bit of activity yesterday, this morning the TV film crew was setting up in earnest to shoot an episode of Law and Order: Special Victims Unit. It looks like they’re going to use exteriors – and maybe interiors – of the Fletcher-Sinclair House, which is being restored and sits on the corner of 79th and Fifth.

After checking that scene out, the female Dawn Jogger headed into the Park for a not too nippy run around the reservoir, adding some distance by extending the loop to return by the Lake. She liked the way the upper east side buildings reflected in the reservoir this morning – and also the look of the clouds. Snow is predicted but not the blizzard of 10 days ago…
