Bedwell Bayfront by moonlight and sunlight

The Dawn Jogger’s trusty Lumix just can’t quite capture the vistas that greet the visitor before dawn at Bedwell Bayfront Park, her latest Wednesday routine. This morning she arrived as the moon was going down, full enough to reflect on the salt ponds. Looking east, the impending sunrise was giving the wispy clouds a pink glow. A 60 minute visual treat…

Late season dahlia spotted on afternoon walk

dahlia in menlo park

The Dawn Jogger was not that this morning. An unexpected house guest prompted a more leisurely breakfast and then trip up to SFO. But she took the occasion of an afternoon appointment in the neighborhood to do an extended loop. Along the way she spotted this fabulous dahlia…

Halloween arrived this past weekend

On a walk downtown and back (yes, her knee is cranky again), it was clear that Menlo residents had been busy decorating their homes for Halloween this past weekend (just as the Dawn Jogger had done with the help of Julie and John and the enthusiastic support of Grace). These ghosts were by far her favorites…

A day of taste treats and horses

Good meal deal and horses, all in one day, equal a pretty good day in the Dawn Jogger’s mind. Add to that the kind of warm fall weather that folks in the Bay Area are accustomed to, and it has all the makings a a really good day.

The DJ has always found Sundays difficult, more so now that she spends them largely alone. The emptiness of this first day of new week isn’t softened even by a great visit with Grace and the gang on Saturday. Sunday stands starkly alone.

On this Sunday morning, the DJ was at the farmers market soon after it opened and then did a walk around the Stanford campus. She checked in to preparations for the Red Barn festival that was happening later in the afternoon and found herself surprised at the how big horses have become, or better stated, the largeness of currently fashionable horses. (Her off-the-track-Thoroughbred Dandy was a wisp compared to the big gelding she saw today being walking prior to an official appearance.)

After the second Sunday of the month Taize service at Trinity, there was the “good deal” Sunday supper ($25 for three courses) at the Four Seasons Silicon Valley shared with the Loftesness family. Her photo of the first course tuna tartar doesn’t do the dish justice – it was yummy…

The Dawn Jogger’s marriage to Chris and Steve

The Dawn Jogger is a bit surprised at her sadness about Steve Jobs’ death. She didn’t know the man and has heard horror stories about his management style during both his first and second stint at Apple. All that aside, his passing gnaws at her.

This morning she did a three-mile walk around old Palo Alto in advance of an InMenlo interview. The route took her past the Jobs family home. It reminded her of those couple of years she commuted east along Embarcadero and the frequent sightings of Steve taking one (or more) of his children to Walter Hays School.

And then it sort of hit her: Steve Jobs was as much a part of her life as was husband Chris. She’s sure that Apple never released a product that Chris did not purchase. Finding some of the most obscure of these during the garage clean out earlier this year, she contacted a friend who works for Apple, and he was delighted to fetch the “still in the box” loot for the Apple library. That Chris also worked for Apple for five years made it all the more sweet.

Until proven otherwise, Chris remains Apple’s biggest fan. But here’s the rub. She can’t believe he’s not here to hash over just what Steve and Apple meant to him. How do you live through a death when someone is already dead…

Yet another spectacular Dish morning

Big Dish at dawn

Fall day after the rain on Big Dish

When the Dawn Jogger pulled into the Piers Lane parking area before dawn this morning, she had company; about five other cars were already parked. So maybe she’s not the only one who enjoys setting out in the dark up the back side of the Dish and being greeted with a sunrise at the top. When the sun was fully up, the blue sky was glorious. And yes, it was a bit nippy starting out…

Early morning outing at Bedwell Bayfront Park includes showers

Clouds after rainfall over Bedwell Bayfront Park in Oct 2011

When the Dawn Jogger arrived at Bedwell Bayfront Park this morning before dawn she found herself almost alone, which is not typical. The clouds that brought rain overnight had largely departed, so what did her fellow early morning exercisers know that she didn’t? Lingering showers, that’s what.

The 10 minutes of wetness didn’t dampen her enthusiasm for walking the Park around sunrise. It’s at that time of the day that, in her mind, it’s the most magical. The red salt ponds and orange fields just glow. And there’s plenty of water fowl to watch going about the business of breakfast…

Forget pets, it’s missing sweaters that we want returned

First, a disclosure that shouldn’t really be surprising. It’s dark when the Dawn Jogger heads out this time of the year. That makes photo taking tough, especially when trusty Lumio “thinks” it can take a snapshot that in reality comes out to be nearly black.

But luck was with the DJ this morning. The sun had just come up (after 7 am), and she was about the cross the bridge over San Francisquito Creek when she stumbled upon this “LOST” sign, which, she must admit, amused her. How attached can the owner to be this garment? Obviously enough to offer a reward…

Bloodbath, just as predicted

At least the Dawn Jogger took no expectations to tonight’s football game. Stanford was expected to win and win big. Stanford won and won big. It was much more palatable to photograph the female Bruins on the field…

Crows take up residence in time for Halloween

crows in Menlo Park

Residents talk about just when the crows came to Menlo Park. The consensus is that they haven’t always been here. But now there are flocks of them. One such flock seemed to follow the Dawn Jogger as she walked the neighborhood route. She likes their tree top perch the best…
