Stanford’s spaceship gets a coat of cement

stanford arts center_080311

The Dawn Jogger finds it amazing to watch the building of what will be a new performing arts center at Stanford, set to open a year from now. She calls it a space ship as the early scaffolding looked just like something that had landed from outer space. It’s now gotten a layer of cement on its sides. The land that it sits on next to Frost Amphitheater was once occupied by the Men’s Gymnasium, damaged beyond repair in the 1906 earthquake. The 21st century brings better earthquake resistant building techniques one would think…

Bridge over not so troubled water

Usually by this time of year, there’s not a drop of water anywhere near Lake Lagunita. But the June rains have left a a few large puddles near the dry lake bed. During the rainy months a stream of water pours into the Lake, which, in the past, has necessitated some tricky puddle jumping. Earlier this year, a bridge of sorts was placed across the widest part of the trough of water. And now some enterprising soul has added extra lumber to make sure it holds up during the next rainy season. The fact that it still comes in handy in August is what’s surprising…

Gray skies negate pretty sunrise

Big Dish on August 1 2011

Many local folks are commenting the cool summer, except, of course those few days earlier in July when it was scorching hot. But the coastal fog has been much in evidence most mornings, which keeps the lid on temperatures later in the day. The overcast skies also mean the Dawn Jogger is not privy to any good sunrises, even in on the mornings, like this one, when she was actually up early enough to see one. She had to settle for yet another cloudy Dish shot…

Sunday out and about with Grace

The Dawn Jogger headed over to Oakland today to spend some time with Grace and her Dad. (Brother James and Mom are in SoCal.) The outing included a stop at the good Piedmont market Mulberry’s for sandwiches and a picnic in the part across the street. The play equipment was preschool size and Grace held her own with a bunch of three year old boys who kept hogging the slide (natch). They visit finished with a look at a home Grace’s parents are considering in the Montclair neighborhood. The very attractive house has a lot of steps but otherwise much to recommend it. Grace, of course, thinks steps are for skipping up and down…

Return to jogging Baylands

Pelicans at Baylands
The Dawn Jogger made a date with herself last night to jog Baylands this morning. While she’s walked it with a couple of friends, it’s been awhile since she jogged the five-mile loop. The absence of the cranky knee elevated it to the top of the list. Even in the summer, it’s cool, and there’s always something to see. The sun had just come up when she came to the section where the white pelicans often congregate, always a pretty scene. Of course, a trip to Baylands often means a stop at Mayfield Cafe for its excellent version of corned beef and poached eggs. All that good work immediately undone…

Red canoe goes kosher – or does it?

red canoe near Lake Lagunita

The last place the Dawn Jogger had seen the red canoe was up on what was once the Lake Lagunita beach, now no longer a beach because the Lake – when it is a lake – is no longer a recreational body of water, according to Stanford. This morning it had taken up residence directly across the dry lake bed. It was nestled on a deck under a oak tree on what used to be called the Kennedy Kosher Coop. Of course, whether the coop still exists is in question. Who knows, Stanford may have deemed it no longer kosher, just to do along with no longer recreational…

Secret sights of Menlo Park at dawn

The good thing about jogging close to dawn is that you get to spot things that aren’t ordinarily visible. This isn’t the first time the Dawn Jogger has found a seldom used back gate to the Allied Arts open, revealing the woodworking barn. This time she got a tighter shot of the bronze buck…

What’s a Phillies flag doing in Menlo Park?

It may be red, white and blue but that’s no American flag. The Dawn Jogger noticed it first a couple of days ago – a no mistaking Phillies flag hoisted in a Menlo Park front yard that is clearly in Giants territory. Enemy flags are hoisted in Menlo from time to time, most noticeably when Notre Dame is in town to play Stanford. (Cal flags are not, for the record, enemy flags; USC flags are absolutely enemy flags.) The value of posting late in the day is knowing the Giants evened the series tonight in Philadelphia. And, of course, there was that trade today. Welcome to San Francisco, Carlos Beltram…

Just another homeless encampment, but wait…

Trashy Lake Lagunita

The Dawn Jogger is more or less back to her regular jogging schedule, which means the loop from home around Lake Lagunita and back on Tuesday and Thursday. This morning she spotted a well worn path and took a detour to see what was there. What she found looked a bit like a homeless encampment except for the fact that the furniture was on the newish side and the fire pit was hardly a random pile of rubble. The scattered bottles and cans did, however, give the scene  a rather trashy look. Guess even a dry lake bed is good drinking spot…

Flying the Canadian flag for some reason

runner on Big Dish

While people who communicate online via Facebook and other social media sites are adopting the Norwegian flag as their photo ID to show their sympathy after that’s nation’s tragedy, a runner spotted atop Big Dish this morning was waving the Canadian flag. We didn’t stop to ask why…
