In celebration of a hot summer solstice

The Dawn Jogger was again up early and she’s never seen more folks out – all in attempt to beat the heat of the day to come. To keep up the poetry reading begun when her friend was in town last week, she’s offering up a little Shakespeare to celebrate the summer solstice:

Ariel’s song from The Tempest
Act v, Scene 1

Where the bee sucks, there suck I:
In a cowslip’s bell I lie;
There I couch when owls do cry;
On the bat’s back I do fly
After summer merrily:
Merrily, merrily shall I live now
Under the blossom that hangs on the bough.

You know it’s going to be a hot day when…

Big Dish shortly after dawn on a warm morning…you’re up as early as 5:30 in the morning and there’s no fog bank on the western hills. Given that she was awake early and heard that temps would reach the 90s – even on the Peninsula – the Dawn Jogger got into action this morning. The sun was just coming up as she made her way across two fairways of the Stanford golf course. By the time she made it to the top of the Dish, the shadows were long and the heat from Sunday was still evident. She’s trying to be conservative by walking downhill…

Remembering two great Dads – and saluting new Papa John

The Dawn Jogger was lucky indeed to be adopted by John W. Hubbard (aka Booka) – and lucky enough to marry the male DJ, who, in turn, was a superb father to son John. Now the torch is passed to a new generation. John’s lap was full at a mini day-before-Father’s-Day celebration, balancing James on one side and Grace on the other. They’ll soon be the ones talking about what a great Dad they have. Grace, of course, already knows…

Back to the Dish on sunny Saturday morning

hawk spotted near Big DishWith her legs still feeling the effects of 20 plus miles of walking/hiking over a three day period, the Dawn Jogger headed over to Big Dish on a cool but sunny Saturday morning. Always good to pump up the endorphins with a jog up hill (but she’s walking down to spare the knee). A big hawk perched on a fence was getting a lot of attention from runners and walkers alike. Grace and the gang due for dinner, James first visit to Menlo…

Who makes the decision to change locations?

For about 2/3rds around the Baylands loop, the Dawn Jogger and friend followed a group of white pelicans. Watching them raised a number of questions. Why are the brown pelicans on the Coast (they’d seen them yesterday) and the white pelicans on the Bay? Can what they eat be that much different to make them stake out territory in different locations? More important: who signals that it’s time to move from one location, flying a 100 yards or so to another spot on the slough? Clearly, they are easily amused be it windy or winding…

Great day to head to the coast

Any time it gets in the high 80s on the Peninsula, it’s a good excuse to head to the coast, so that was today’s “field trip” for the Dawn Jogger and her friend. It was cool enough early, that a light jacket was required but the sun warmed thing up as the morning wore on, all the best to show off the plethora of flowers at their spring best. The walk was long – 8 miles – but not strenuous due to the flat terrain. Her tour guide status meant artichoke/green chile soup at Duarte’s Taven for lunch…

It’s hot (finally) and so are the wildflowers

The first warm weather of the season arrived yesterday, as did a friend from the East. That made for a good reason to hike Windy Hill. They got off to an early enough start to get up the steep sunny side before the heat of the day set in, and then took their time ambling back down Hamm’s Gulch. At every elevation there were different wildflower stands. Of particular note were the the blue something or others…

Grace goes bead hunting with big girl

It finally felt like summer this morning, perfect conditions for a good morning outing for Grace and the Dawn Jogger at the Farmers Market where Grace helped pick out berries, flowers and other provisions. But the big highlight of the day was meeting Sophia, daughter of friend Chrisie and going bead hunting at the Bead Lady’s house before heading to Cafe Zoe for its third anniversary celebration. The lure there was a bounce house as well as a great area out back where there is a play house and baskets of toys to explore. Sophia took her big girl responsibilities seriously, walking with Grace hand in hand. And, of course, pointing out the sparkly beads…

Having the guts to let her fly

Nativity Carnival
The Dawn Jogger was up early this morning for a five-mile jog through the Stanford campus in anticipation for a Grace overnight. (Make that Grace the daredevil.) It’s the weekend of the annual Nativity Carnival, which friends had assured her had a fair number of kiddie rides. With baby James a week old, it was good timing.

And indeed the kiddie rides were plentiful. The responsible grandparent aka DJ steered her to the merry-go-round, the caged ferris wheel, the rocket ships, and car ride (biker Grace chose a motorcycle). Together the rode the Dragon mini roller coaster (Grace loves the roller coaster at the Oakland zoo, so that was easy) and the high ferris wheel.

But Grace remembered a ride that the DJ had not suggested, a swing ride much higher and faster than the one she’d gone on at Happy Hollow some months ago. “I want to go on the swings,” was the request. So they walked back to the corner of the Carnival where the swing ride was, and she just made the height requirement. It reminded the DJ of when she first went to Disneyland and was tall enough for the Autopia ride even though, by age, she was only marginally equipped to handle the steering. (That was before the ride had a rail down the center, which made the “driving” easier.)

So what is a grandparent to do? This one repeated over and over, “Hold on tight,” as she oversaw the straps that [supposedly] were to keep riders safe, and then she held her breath while she watched the 3 1/2 year old soar high (and seemingly endlessly – had the ride operator fallen asleep?). The kicker: It was the only ride where she grinned from start to finish…

Mystery marker – how long will it last?

When the Dawn Jogger got home from her neighborhood walk this morning, a blinking red marker had been left on the rock that keeps folks from driving over her side yard. Over the years, some have tried to “run it over” and the result has always been damage to the underside of a car. Years ago, after hearing a loud thud/crunch, the DJs ran out to see a car down the street with metal dragging underneath it.

She doesn’t know if this dropped off the wrist of a dawn jogger – it’s light so early, she doesn’t think so. Or did someone mad at the rock decide to mark it? How or why it got there remains a mystery. She’s going to see how long it stays there…
