Return to Big Dish, finally

Big Dish May 2011

Tall mustard on Big Dish landIt’s been about four weeks since the Dawn Jogger first grounded herself entirely and then restricted jogging/walking to the relatively flat surfaces. While in New York, she encountered some of the hills of Central Park without consequences. So with her cranky knee feeling pretty good, she returned to Big Dish this morning, walking the loop from the Stanford Ave. gate. Not surprisingly, lots of changes including a fire path that’s been mowed on either side of the established walking/jogging path. The hills still had a slight green tint, but gold was clearly on the way. April rains meant the mustard was about six feet high. Good to get back to the open space…

Double duty on Bike to Work Day morning

The Dawn Jogger figured there would be an energizer station at the San Mateo Drive bike bridge, which would make a good “spotted” for InMenlo, so she did a neighborhood jog this morning. She got there soon after the two volunteers and a city employee had set up shop for the morning. While there she admired volunteer Bernadette’s cool looking cruiser…

Morning to check on newest crop of ducklings

ducklings at Lake Lagunita

The Dawn Jogger woke up this morning back in the Bay Area. The fog had come in overnight, covering the Peninsula. That made for a chillier morning than she had experienced in New York City.

Of course, she was also a bit on NYC time, which meant she woke up around 5:00 am. Luckily it’s light early, so about a half hour later she got up, dressed and jogged across the golf course to Lake Lagunita, which had receded a lot over the past week even though water was flowing into it from upper reservoirs on Stanford land. That was lucky for the latest crop of ducklings…

Farewell to green and glorious Central Park

Lake in Central Park

The Dawn Jogger has been in New York only six days but she’s become quite accustom to her morning outings in Central Park. That the weather has cooperated 100% is an added plus. It seems to put people in a good mood, the crankiness of the City diminishes.

She got into the Park early enough this morning for the dogs to be out in force. The range of breeds is amazing, from Great Dane to something so small it ould be held in a hand. The common denominator – they, too, all had a smile on their face…

Watery Central Park, times two

New York City reservoir in Central Park

The sky was almost bluer than could be imagined when the Dawn Jogger did her jaunt around the reservoir this morning. The throngs of Central Park visitors were gone, replaced by hard core exercisers and the usual sprinkling of European tourists. (Oh, what a Euro can buy!)

After catching up on some odds and ends that needed taking care of, she went back out after lunch, walking across the Park to the Natural History museum where she learned about the human brain and took in the dinosaur rooms, which were great fun to see. On the way back, she stopped to watch the rowboats on the lake. Two picture perfect postcards in one day…

Journey to Coney Island, in remembrance of Mom

Coney Island boardwalk

One of the most memorable photos the Dawn Jogger has from her childhood is a shot of her mother and her wearing sundresses and pop beads (was that the name of those plastic beads that you “popped” into place?) sitting on the boardwalk at Coney Island. That was a long time ago. Long enough that Coney Island was still a tourist destination, although the calendar would tell, on its decline.

So that’s the back story why the DJ got up this morning and made the long journey from the UES to the tip of Brooklyn. She was kind of hoping that the Cyclones, a minor league baseball team, would be playing in its too cute new park, but admits she didn’t check the schedule. Alas, no game.

Nathans Hot Dogs at Coney IslandThankfully, she got there shortly after noon when the line at Nathans hot dog stand just across from the subway station was only two deep. And, as she’s found in her travels everywhere, the 1/2 mile rule was evident – few visitors strolled beyond that distance. The result: the boardwalk was all hers has she walked to the far end at about 33rd St.

Coney Island is a strange place. Nursing homes hug its perimeter. Internet posts warn that “it’s not safe,” although there was no apparent danger on a day that saluted mothers, one that seemed to bring out every ethnic and religious group in NYC. She’s not quite sure when she’s seen such an eclectic assortment of humans, all enjoying the sunshine.

Its faded glory (an old roller skating rink with a long sunbather, pictured) was as interesting as its revived amusement zones. Luna Park, in particular, was all bustling and freshly painted.

In one of those weird twists of NYC, on the way back uptown on the subway, a woman and her two daughters, all dressed in the black and grey colors of some Jewish sect (which one she’s not sure) sought out her advice. “I remember Central Park from my girlhood,” the woman said, “and I’m taking my daughters there today. You look like a walker, can you show me how to get there?” And that the DJ did…

Picture perfect New York postcard

Central Park, May 2011

To get downtown this afternoon, the Dawn Jogger walked through the oh so green Central Park before catching the F Line, which took her to the Hester Street Fair (where food stalls rule).  She continues to marvel at how gorgeous the Park is. And it’s not like she hasn’t seen it before…

Musical morning in New York

tulips in Central ParkBack in the 90s when the Dawn Jogger came to New York frequently on business, a favorite treat was staying the weekend and listening to Rhythm Review on WBGO on Saturday morning. The show is still on from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm and it’s still a treat – great mix of R&B and soul spanning decades.

She completed her morning run in the Park in time to listen to the show and found a different kind of music in the outdoors – a violinist playing Mozart at one end the Mall in front of a bank of tulips. And not surprisingly there were even more people taking advantage of the sunshine than yesterday…

Wow – glorious spring morning in the Park

Bethesda Terrace in Central Park

The Dawn Jogger can’t remember when she was last in New York City in the spring but she’s thinking it was a long, long time ago. When she was here last winter, she thought Central Park couldn’t be prettier but it is in the spring. The trees are all sporting new leaves and there are flowers and blossoms everywhere.

Her route this morning took her up to the Reservoir and around and then back by the lake at 72nd St. Never has she seen the Park so packed with people on a weekday morning. Tours, strollers, exercisers, musicians (a keen eye will spot the sax player at Bethesda Terrace in the photo), the park is just teeming with visitors. Maybe that she ran rather late in the morning helped…

No sweep but fun at Citi Field anyway

at Citi field watching San Francisco Giants

by Giants broadcast boothA slumping slugger hits a bomb and a pitcher with 7 plus ERA finds his stuff. Such was the lot of the Dawn Jogger today when she attended her first game at Citi Field, watching the Giants lose to the Mets, 2 to 5.

She’d gone to the game with a New York-based Giants friend, who is good friends with the male DJs’ good friend David. It’s fun to see a game with a real, knowledgeable fan, and there were quite a few other Giants boosters in attendance. Together the put up with a chilly, cool wind – she hears gusts up to 35 mph – giving the new stadium a Candlestick like feel, complete with blowing hot dog wrappers.

Just one row removed, they had the exact same view as Giants radio broadcasters Jon Miller and Dave Fleming, meaning that they couldn’t see any better who was warming up in the bullpen than the play-by-play announcers.

One last obervation: Mr Met is a boring, lifeless mascot. Go Lou Seal – we’re so lucky in San Francisco…
