Desmond, George and Chris: “Together” today

Rev. Dr. George Regas and Most Rev. Dr. Desmond Tutu

It was well past dawn today that the Dawn Jogger watched the Most Rev. Dr. Desmond Tutu stride down the long center aisle of Grace Cathedral, a sight that she’d been looking forward to all week. During the 80s, the DJs lived in South Pasadena and attended All Saints Church Pasadena, which would be visited each year by the Archbishop, giving parishioners a personal face and witness to the horror of apartheid. In his sermons, there was never rancor or hatred towards the system that was oppressing him and other black South Africans, instead always forgiveness and reconciliation. It was a powerful message delivered by a man diminutive in size but large in heart. Son John remembers visits to his Sunday School class where the Archbishop would sit on the floor with the children, joking about his name, “You can call me Bishop Three Three.”

Desmond Tutu preaching at Grace CathedralIn a few months the Archbishop will retire from public life, so the female DJ knew this would be her last opportunity to hear him preach. Grace was filled; expectations were high. The morning did not disappoint. She was even lucky enough to get the photo of the day – at least in her mind. As the Archbishop was leaving the sanctuary, he paused to embrace his long time friend the Rev. Dr. George Regas, who was rector of all All Saints for 28 years, a span that included the 1980s visits by the Archbishop (who again preached there a couple of weeks ago on the current U.S. visit).

When the Archbishop opened his arms while preaching from the pulpit, the female DJ was instantly reminded of another open-armed shot that the male DJ had taken of Desmond giving a speech (she no longer can remember where – it’s in one of those garage boxes!) in Los Angeles, also during the 80s. She found a jpg of the photo on his computer and knew she must include it. The male DJ would have turned 60 this week…

Blue skies and a llama encounter

The Dawn Jogger took the weatherman’s warning to pursue outdoor activities today, not tomorrow when rain is expected to return. She hadn’t been out to Arastradero for awhile – previous rains would have made many the trails really muddy. But after a week long dry period, she figured it was a good morning to see that open space at its glorious green best. As she made her way up the hill, she noticed that her favorite oak was starting to bud. But the favorite sighting of the day was the llama getting his usual Saturday AM outing. Doesn’t everyone see llamas while jogging?…

Otherworldly morning after otherwordly event

Did the Dawn Jogger mention that after the big garage clean out yesterday that the plastic stand that prompts up her huge Apple monitor split in two? Or the fact that is was a bit unnerving? One knows that things can fail at any time – but just after the throwaway piles were established and the hauler was on the way? She will not dwell on these things other than to say maybe she was still in an otherworldly mood when doing her Friday Big Dish run this morning. Almost every photo she took had something that was a bit surreal about it. She chose the most atmospheric…

Two poser morning before the big clean up

The Dawn Jogger arose with one thought on her mind – today was day one of the big garage clean up. It was at the top of the “to do” list and she’d gotten someone to help her. So it was up and out early for a spin around Lake Lagunita before hunkering down to a day of sorting and tossing and keeping.

She’d like to think the fact that she saw not one but two posers was a kind of “go team” rallying cry. They were across the lake from each other – the snowy egret on one side and the Blue Heron on the other – and clearly hunting for breakfast. It at least got her mind off of the chore to come.

Post clean out report: Made a huge dent. Discards already picked up by hauling company. Day two on Monday. And not nearly as awful as she imagined…

What’s with the District 9 cloud?

Strange shaped cloud over Big Dish

Snowy egret near Big DishWhy the Dawn Jogger got it into her mind that she’d get up early now that the gates to the Big Dish open at 6:00 am she’s not sure. That decision put her back running in the predawn, which was made extra atmospheric by a particularly dark, saucer-shaped cloud that was hovering overhead looking like the spacecraft in District 9. Even as the sky got lighter, the cloud’s distinct shape was apparent. While there was only an occasional sprinkle, the forecast rain kept the usual Dish early exercisers to a minimum – or what it that she was about 1/2 early? The Snowy egret usually found on the Junipero Serra side of the Dish land had made its way all the way to the top. Aligned with an oak tree, it struck a pose…

Surreal textures at dawn

Lake Laguita shortly after dawn

The Dawn Jogger was treated to the changing textures of the sunrise this morning. The sky was still pink when she jogged across the second fairway. By the time she was all around Lake Lagunita, the sun was fully up and the clouds streaks of white. And yes, it was in the chilly high 30s…

Beauty of winter, coming of spring

barren oak near Big Dish

robinIt was about 10 degrees warmer this morning when the Dawn Jogger set out for her Monday Dish run, a still chilly 40, producing a frosty golf course. She hit the Junipero Serra gate about the same time the sun came up (and will do so until day light savings time puts her in the dark again). With the sun’s rays, the barren oaks glow against the blue sky.

Another sight greeted her when she returned home – a pair of robins were hopping around the backyard. She think they werechecking out nesting possibilities. A pair has nested in the patio table umbrella for the past three years, so it’s not unexpected, although she thinks early. The real rub: there’s no male DJ to share in the changing season…

Very chilly start to the day, very strange vehicle

Big wheeled vehicle in Menlo Park

At least it had not been warm in the desert. That made it easier for the Dawn Jogger to greet a very chilly morning – around 30 degrees, according to both of her backyard thermometers. She got off to an early start, wanting to get exercise checked off the list due to other commitments of the day. She chose an up and down hilly four-mile route in Sharon Heights. Along the way, she came upon this interesting big-wheeled vehicle “parked” in one homeowner’s front yard. She thinks she’s seen it driven at the 4th of July parade. And she’ll probably need to follow up for InMenlo…

At last – front and center at Giants’ spring training

San Francisco Giants spring training game in Scottsdale

For z million years the Dawn Jogger has been saying she’d go to see the Giants during spring training. This year she made it. On a cool and cloudy afternoon in Scottsdale, she watched her team drub the Bums (aka Dodgers). She was there in full Giant regalia, as were many other fans. Of course friend Tom was there in full Dodgers regalia (wife Terri stayed neutral). He made the mistake of getting cocky when the Dodgers went up 1-0 early. Bad mistake, as the Giants came roaring back, including at two-run homer by the slimmer Pablo Sandoval. She’s so glad she finally got there…

On the equestrian trail in Phoenix

former home of Senator Tom McCain

In advance of the Giant’s spring training game in Scottsdale, it was up and hit the trail this morning with friend Tom, who usually runs the route he showed the Dawn Jogger this morning. Sidelined by a minor injury, they walked along the Phoenix equestrian trail, one of the city’s most historic routes that, said Tom, horses do occasionally use. Along the way, the stopped at one of the “luxurious mansions” – as described in the most recent Presidential election  – owned by Arizona Senator John McCain on Central Avenue. He sold it – whoops the DJ doesn’t remember when. But if you want to buy it, it’s on the market again…
