Wow – fabulous musical instrument museum in Phoenix

Listening to sound at Museum of Musical InstrumentsIn a torrential downpour, the Dawn Jogger headed to the airport this morning on her way to Phoenix. The purpose was to see her first ever spring training game. But friend Terri, who picked her up at the airport, had a surprise. A visit to the relatively new Museum of Musical Instruments, a privately funded venture that is absolutely fabulous. It was impossible to do it justice in the three or so hours they were there, but suffice to say it seems to house every musical instrument from every continent in the world. And yes, she got to bang a gong…

On the look out for old landmarks

The Dawn Jogger is spring training bound, staying with two classmates from Hillview School days. Her mother always told her she took swimming lessons – with Olympic bound Dick Roth, no less – at Tom’s parents’ house. And Terri’s house was the first place she ever felt like an authentic princess, what with its grand staircase, high ceilings, and many rooms. It was one of the original Atherton estate homes, and unlike many others, is still standing. Remembering those long ago but good childhood memories, she decided to do a six mile loop through neighboring town of Atherton, which she found surprisingly busy on a non-school day morning, largely due to all the construction. What she didn’t find was a good view of Terri’s old home. Like many other homes in Atherton, it’s now protected from the street by a high wall and gate. At least it was good exercise…

Greeter steer at a dawn

Steer at dawn on Big Dish

With the sun rising earlier and earlier every day, the Dawn Jogger is doing less and less running in the dark. There was first light when she headed up the Dish from Piers Lane this morning, although most of the herd was still curled up on the ground. But keeping with the “there’s always one” theme, a single young steer was right next to the path. She thought of him as her dawn greeter…

Path blocked by dozens of ducks

Ducks at Lake Lagunita

With the water in Lake Lagunita, the mallard ducks have returned in mass. That means that the Dawn Jogger gets greeted around sunrise with fly-ins, accompanied by much quacking. By the time she’d gotten to side of the lake nearest the dorms, it looked like someone had called a meeting. Dozens of ducks were waddling about, none in a particular hurry to move out of the way. At least until the DJ got within 10 feet when they all flew back into the water. Pairing off will now start in earnest…

All alone with the “guys” on the Dish

sunrise from atop Big Dish

young cattle on Big Dish landIt was clear today was a holiday for most people. Just before sunrise the Dawn Jogger had the Dish almost to herself. By jogging at the same time most mornings, she sees the same people. Most had slept in apparently today.

It was chilly – enough so that she tried out her new quilted running jacket, which felt good especially in the hollows. The bare trees were, as usual, were pretty silhouetted against the sunrise. And in the continuing “there’s always one” tradition, one young steer was curious enough about the DJ that he started walking towards her for a closer look. How close he would have come, she’ll never know…

Long walk in the mostly sunshine

Lake Lagunita in Feb 2011

Today is being billed as the calm between the storm fronts, so it was ‘must do’ outing for the Dawn Jogger. The challenge was where. She would have loved to hit the trails for a long Sunday stroll, but after the almost non-stop rain of the past 48 hours, she knew they would all be a muddy and slippery mess. So instead she took off across the Stanford  campus for 5 1/2 mile loop that took her from its most northern to southern edges. One of the first sights was the water in Lake Lagunita, which has been bone dry all winter except for a little puddle in December. Bird and bikers were both happy…

Marooned with Grace at Academy of Sciences

The Dawn Jogger had a good excuse not to don rain gear and head out on what would have been a very wet and very chilly AM jog. She was driving north to San Francisco where she was meeting Grace and her Dad for a morning at the Academy of Sciences, last visited by Grace on her 1st birthday, so a de facto all new experience. The top billing went to the penguins (wave! the male DJ would be proud!) but the albino alligator and butterflies that fluttered by her head were also hits. Snakes, frogs and lizards all fine, too, but keeping to her own set of rules, “No bugs.” Given the rainy day, they were far from the only family in attendance…

Pretty morning for long Dish run

Looking south on Big Dish land

Snowy egret on Big Dish landAbout an hour after the Dawn Jogger returned home from an extended Dish run, the skies again opened up and the rain poured down. So there was a reason she had the area practically to herself this morning – others had read the weather report. But anyone there before 9 AM was treated to gorgeous nuanced light caused by the low cloud ceiling, a glimpse of the snow on Mt. Hamilton, and the snowy egret on guard in its usual place. The eye/brain could see more than her trusty Lumix – there were textures and layers everywhere she looked. A really great outing with extra distance to feel virtuous about…

Taking poser to new heights

The male Dawn Jogger coined the term “poser” for the many Great Blue Herons and snowy egrets that DJs would see on their morning runs and weekend hikes. These birds appear to stake territory so you often see them in the same area over a period of weeks (like the egret now hanging around Big Dish land). And they do tend to warily “pose,” as long as you don’t get to close. This morning there was a Great Blue Heron hunting for its breakfast on the banks of Lake Lagunita that held its ground, allowing the DJ to get within five feet.  Must have not wanted to get too far away from some tasting morsel it had its eye on…

Wow – what a rainbow!

rainbow over Big Dish land

So the chatter this morning around the Bay Area has been about the weather. A somewhat unpredictable low pressure system rolled in last night and was still providing significant precipitation when the Dawn Jogger usually gets up for her Wednesday full Dish run. She waited it out, and the delayed hour meant bluer skies – and a gorgeous rainbow. About the same time son John was reporting a massive hailstorm just 40 miles away in Oakland. All underscoring the Bay Area’s micro-climates…
